Equipping of the disability center at Machakos Teachers College in Machakos County
Estimates from the United Nations indicate that in the world, there are about one billion people living with some form of disability which translates to one seventh of the worlds population. Of these, at least 220million are youths. This is the most productive age group. In Kenya, 4.6 percent of the population lives with some form of disability according to government estimates. Despite catering for learners with special needs, Machakos Teachers College lacked a suitable environment to meet their needs.
In line with our strategy to promote education for learners with special needs, Safaricom Foundation invested Kshs.5.5million towards the construction and equipping of a disability center at Machakos Teachers College. The disability center will be the only facility in East Africa that will cater for college students with multiple disabilities. It comprises of four washrooms with wide doors, a waiting room, three offices, an assessment room, a soundproof room, a large Seminar room, a production room and a display room.
The centre will benefit at least 70 learners with special needs. Of these 40 are visually impaired, 22 have hearing impairment and 8 have physical disabilities.
