About the project

The Challenge

The 700 Students at the Kathithyamaa Primary School, located in Isinga, Machakos County have been learning and studying in a poor environment where five classrooms have leaky roofs and poor potholed floors. The students are unable to learn as properly and as efficiently they should because the facilities are below par.

The Intervention

James Muteti, a Safaricom employee and a former student of Kathithyamaa Primary School, and the school principal Raphael Ndavi, made a proposal to the Safaricom Foundation to rehabilitate five classrooms. The Foundation together with James contributed Kshs. 1.2 million to renovate the five classrooms that were in a really bad state. This project was under the Pamoja initiative that encourages Safaricom staff to contribute towards the community through positively impacting projects.
The Nairobi East Safaricom staff also donated text books worth Kshs. 198,000 to the 700 pupils in this school.

The Impact

The newly renovated classrooms will create a better learning environment for the students of the Kathithyamaa Primary School. The classes will now accommodate more children who will not be disturbed by the previously uncomfortable conditions of the class.
