About the project
Safaricom is committed to improve maternal health and reduce child mortality using mobile technology. Safaricom recognizes that the use of mobile technology for health purposes can revolutionize society’s ability to deliver, access and use health information to promote health, fight disease and respond to medical emergencies. In 2013, Save the Children released its 15th Annual State of the World’s Mother and according to statistics, more than 100,000 children die before their fifth birthday. This shows there still remains a huge gap in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Care.
The Safaricom Foundation committed Kshs.100million towards the rehabilitation of the neonatal ward and also renovation of wards at Mathari Mental Hospital. That noble act has seen many children lives see the light of day when they may have died due to lack of proper infrastructure in place to help especially the prenatal babies who rely heavily on oxygen supply.
The Kenyatta National Hospital is the largest referral facility in the country catering for patients from all walks of life and from all corners of Kenya. Therefore, the neonatal ward will not just help the Nairobi county residence but the whole country. There was a greater need for up to standard facilities to ensure the survival of the newborn children. The newborn unit caters for approximately 100 babies per day and such a huge number can only survive in such reliable conditions as provided by the neonatal ward.
