Lamu County is one of the counties with a high maternal mortality rate with 676 deaths per 100, 000 live births accounting for over 60% of maternal deaths along with 15 other counties. The challenge lay in lack of infrastructure which limited access to maternal health care.
Safaricom Foundation renovated and equipped the High Dependency and Newborn Units at the King Fahad Hospital and equipped the Maternal and Child Health Unit at Mpeketoni Hospital at a cost of KES18.8 million.
Maternal health care in Lamu County has improved with both hospitals upgraded to provide better services.
