About the project

The Challenge

Kilifi District Hospital is a level 4 government hospital located along Kilifi- Malindi road.It serves an estimated half a million people and has a bed capacity of only 172. Despite poor facilities and inadequate government funding, the hospital was voted as the best District Hospital in Kenya in 2010. This highlights the staff’s commitment and dedication to providing the people of Kilifi with quality healthcare. The hospital had one theatre that catered for all case. It needed a specialized one for maternal related complaints.

The Intervention

Friends of Kilifi Hospital Trust (FoKHT), a registered charity whose aim is to improve health services at the hospital and the community at large by raising funds worked closely with the hospital’s administration to identify financial supporters from Friends. Safaricom foundation funded the equipping of the Maternity theatre at a grant of Kshs 5,906,100.

The Impact

Non-emergency cases will no longer be delayed as before, maternal emergency cases took precedence. With a separate maternity operating theatre, the former theatre can now be used for other cases and maternal emergency cases will be attended at the new theatre.
