About the project
In the usually dry Yatta Plateau, in Machakos, the prolonged dry spell experienced in 2009 decimated livestock and left farms bare.
Through Ustawi, the Safaricom Foundation and KCDF donated a farmer’s kit, comprising a greenhouse, fertilizers, seeds, a drip irrigation system and a 600-litre tank to the Makutano Community Development Association (MCDA), an organization set up by community leaders to bring people together, inspire self -belief and enable them to address their challenges.
Within two months of the installation of the greenhouse, members of the community who used to buy food from Makuu town 50 kilometers away, were relieved and excited to find out that they could now buy fruit and vegetables from their local Community Development Association (MCDA). Their nearest town, Kithimani, once a sleepy town, became a busy market centre, with hundreds of young people earning an income from selling home grown fruit and vegetables.
