About the project
In Turkana County, the average distance between health facilities is 50 km against the WHO recommended 5 km. The ration of doctor to population is 1 doctor to 70,000 people against the WHO recommended 23 doctors to 10,000 people.
The inadequate manpower and limited resources has placed a lot of strain on the about 150 health facilities in the county making access to health care a challenge in the vast county.
Most residents did not have the opportunity to be screened for diabetes and their status concerning various disease such as hypertension and eye care as a result of the healthcare limitations.
Safaricom Foundation partnered with Kenya Diabetes Management and Information Center (DMI Kenya), and the County Government of Turkana to organise a day long comprehensive medical camp which would address health challenges that the community faced.
1,000 people who turned up for the camp know about their health status regarding various diseases and have advice on how to manage and treat them.
