According to an Uwezo Report in 2018, only 3 out of 5 learners between Grade 3 and 8 could read Grade 2 level Swahili text. This report showed that three counties: Bungoma, Tana River and Turkana, were among the counties that fell most behind.
In Tana River County, over 2,500 learners in 40 schools spread across the county, had challenges in literacy and numeracy skills.
Safaricom Foundation partnered with Zizi Afrique Foundation for an Accelerated Learning Program. They carried out learning camps in Tana River County to equip learners for literacy and numeracy skills.
Already, 507 out of the initial 998 learners in the Accelerated Learning Program have gained literacy skills in just 30 days. The targeted learners will be able to work out their numeracy skills and have literacy skills. This has uplifted their academic performances.
