About the project

The Challenge

The World Health Organisation views fistula as the single most dramatic aftermath of neglected childbirth. An estimated 2million women across the world need fistula surgery. In Kenya, there are only eight hospitals that are fully equipped to conduct fistula surgeries. These are Kenyatta National Hospital, Kisii Level 5 hospital, Garissa Level 5 Hospital, Meru Level 5 Hospital, Coast Level 5 Hospital, Machakos Level 5 Hospital, Embu Level 5 Hospital and Kilifi County Hospital.

The Intervention

In September 2016, Safaricom Foundation launched a series of free Fistula Screening Medical Camps in partnership with Flying Doctors Society of Africa. The camps will be conducted across the country.

The Impact

Over 160 surgeries were conducted in Kisii in September.
