About the project

The Challenge

Kibirigwi Home for the Mentally Challenged Children in Karatina was started in 1983 by the Women’s Guild Movement of Kibirigwi PCEA church. It is the only boarding school for mentally handicapped children in Kirinyaga District.

However, due to lack of boarding facilities the pupils had to travel over long distances, which incurred expenses that many of them couldn’t meet. This situation meant many of the students had to stay at home and remain excessively restrained since most care takers were not well trained.

The Intervention

With the aim to ease the burden of travel, Safaricom Foundation supported the school with Kshs. 2 million. This amount catered to the construction of a girl’s dormitory, bathrooms, kitchen, dining hall, and three classrooms.

The Impact

This has gone a long way in improving the pupils’ quality of life by providing a productive and supportive environment with lowered cost implications. It has also increased the school’s capacity to admit more students. Additionally, pupils are now trained on self-help skills for them to integrate back into the community once they are out of school.
