About the project
At least 3,000 fistula cases are reported each year with only 7.5% of women able to access fistula treatment leaving 2,700 women unable to get receive treatment. 4 out of 1,000 deliveries lead to fistula in Kenya which is an alarming trend.
In Kajiado County, women suffering from fistula stayed at home because they could not afford fistula treatment and because of the shame which is associated with fistula.
Safaricom Foundation partnered with Jamaa Mission hospital and the County government of Kajiado to organize a week long fistula screening and treatment exercise.
60 women received fistula treatment and surgery. They are enjoying lives of dignity and are now able to fulfill their socio-economic roles with no pain and shame.
