About the project

The Challenge

Low incomes have led most mothers to seek healthcare in unlicensed clinics and maternities that have no working guidelines or standard protocol for services. This puts their lives and those of their babies at risk. Kenya has some of the highest maternal and newborn mortality rates in the world. An estimated 7,000 women die each year as a result of pregnancy-related causes. UNICEF rated Kenya as second in the region and 33 globally where a child has the lowest chance of survival below the age of five.

The Intervention

Safaricom Foundation invested Kshs.1.6million to provide maternity equipment to St. Joseph the Worker Dispensary to improve maternal and neo-natal care. The equipment included an infant incubator, Oxygen Concentrator and a Generator.

The Impact

St. Joseph the Worker Dispensary which is one of the only two licensed health facilities in Kangemi can now provide quality maternity care to the women of Kangemi and beyond.
