About the project
Approximately 4,000 – 5,000 new obstetric fistulas occur in East Africa annually. FDSA (Flying Doctors Society of Africa) estimates that in Kenya about 1,200 fistula operations are performed per year. This represents about 30% of women and girls in desperate need of surgery. Safaricom Foundation has been in partnership with FDSA since 2016 to screen and support women with fistula.
Safaricom Foundation in partnership with FDSA, supported screening and corrective surgeries for women with fistula in Kenyatta National Hospital at a cost of over KES 5 million. More than 30 women received free Fistula treatment.
Women and girls suffering from Fistula have received treatment which has relieved them from their pain. They are now comfortable and free to interact with other members of the society and their families because stigmatization has also reduced.
