About the project

The Challenge

Muringa Primary school has a population of 350 pupils. It did not have a reliable source of water enough to address the water needs of the learning institution.

The pupils did not have an alternative but to draw water from the nearby stream whose quality of water was suspect and amount was insufficient to address all the demands of cleanliness in the school.

Not only did the stream trips distract the pupils from their studies but also put their health at risk.

The Intervention

Safaricom Foundation donated, a water harvesting system, 2 tanks of 10,000 litre capacity and one tank of 2,300 litres for KES 550,000. The water would be rain harvested.

The Impact

The pupils and teachers have clean drinking water as well as water for cleaning toilets, classrooms and water for cooking.

The water resources have benefitted the pupils in terms of enhancing their heath. They can keep their school clean and drink clean water. This is expected to increase enrolment to the school and uplift the school’s education standards.
