#EconomicEmpowerment

About the project

The Challenge

Tawasal Fishermen Self-Help Group is an economic empowerment group for fishermen in in Kizingitini Lamu County. It sought to change the lives of the group members and other fishermen in Kizingitini by getting them motor boat engines to ease their fishing.

The Intervention

The Safaricom Foundation partnered with the group and donated four motor boat engines for the members to use for their fishing. They now use less time to access their fishing areas as opposed to when they were using dhows to sail.

The Impact

The four motor engines have been able to transform the way the group did business.

The machines have enabled the group to increase the production of the fish hence increase the income to both the group and individual members. It has also benefited non-members who are also interested in the use of the machines in to make their fishing activities.

With the use of the machines, now they could access ready markets with their merchandise much faster. This boosted business that has turned the entire community’s lives around. With the constantly increasing income, the group re-invests in their businesses and gives back to the most vulnerable.
