About the project

The Challenge

Gacuru Mixed Secondary School has a total of 130 students. There are only 4 classrooms and a temporary science laboratory.
The students interested in ICT used to go as far as 40 Km to Meru Town in the evening or over the weekend in search of a cyber café because the school had no computer laboratory. This was not only unsafe but it also interrupted their studies. It was also costly.

The Intervention

The ninth Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) aims to significantly increase access to information and communications technology and strive to provide universal and affordable access to the Internet in least developed countries by 2020.
It was for this reason that the Safaricom Foundation invested Ksh 900,000 in addition to the community’s contribution of Ksh 146, 000 towards construction, furnishing and purchase of 10 desktop computers in the new 25 capacity computer laboratory.

The Impact

The students now have a chance to be at par with their counterparts around the country. The current 40 students in Form 3 will be the first candidates to be make use of the new computer lab next year. This computer laboratory will also be available to the members of the community.
