About the project

The Challenge

Gesima Primary School is located in Gesima Town in Nyamira County with close to 650 pupils. The school had a poor water management system because they had old water tanks that could not help store water for the schools’ use. This forced the students to walk down the river to fetch water for their use at school therefore greatly affecting their learning time.

The Intervention

The Safaricom Foundation invested Ksh. 1.5 million towards the establishment of a Catch the Rain Project, which is a water management system, a greenhouse and a fishpond to allow the school to store enough water for their use and engage in income generating activities.

The Impact

Through the project, the school is now able to harvest water for their domestic use and for irrigation in the green house. The school has also reared fish in the fish pond which they will be harvesting and selling to supplement their income. The project has also aided in reducing the struggle pupils would go through while fetching water from the river.
