About the project

The Challenge

This school has a total population of 100 students with either low or total visual impairment. Unfortunately, this institution lacked enough assistive devices to serve all the students and would sometime ask parents or guardians to purchase some assistive devices on admission which was costly.

The Intervention

The fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) aims to eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situations by 2030.
It was for this reason that the Safaricom Foundation invested Kshs 1 million towards the purchase of a number of assistive devices including braille machines, braille kits, white canes, braille papers and gall balls.

The Impact

This institution has vocational training which allows the students to be able to earn a living and lead independent lives after school. The new devices will allow the students practise a number of skills in order for them to be self-reliant after.
