About the project

The Challenge

The services at the Coast General newborn unit were hampered by a lack of space and organization at the facility. The doctors faced difficulties in allocating functions and departments since the unit was small even though it had many demands placed on it. A compromised service delivery was risking the lives of the infants at the hospital.

The Intervention

Safaricom Foundation partnered with the County Government of Mombasa to renovate the newborn unit. Safaricom Foundation invested KES 12 million into the renovation and re-organisation of the new born unit. This included plumbing works, electrical works, connection of oxygen piping and installation of doctors’ offices.

The Impact

Service delivery at the newborn unit is more efficient with enough space for different functions. The facility is now able to accommodate more than 30 infants who need care. Their health is more secure with the renovations.
