About the project

The Challenge

Moiben Sub-County hospital with a catchment area of 18, 000 people did not have enough equipment to administer maternity services.

Expectant women were sharing beds in a small space before the hospital relocated maternity services to its own quarters. Women who did not get space traveled almost 50 km to Eldoret town for maternal health services. The sub-county hospital was overwhelmed because of lack of resources.

The Intervention

Safaricom Foundation equipped the Moiben Sub-County hospital with maternity beds, delivery beds, an ultrasound machine, baby cots, heaters, weighing scales, stretchers, wheelchairs, trolleys and assorted maternity equipment for KES 5.2 million.

The Impact

The number of deliveries has risen to 70 deliveries per month.  The women can access maternity care within their own locality sparing them the 50 km journey to Eldoret town.
