About the project

The Challenge

Gathukeini Primary School was started 103 years ago by early church missionaries. It is located along Muranga- Kiriaini Road in Muranga County.

The school has 320 pupils, 165 boys and 155 girls, 80 ECD pupils, 9 TSC teachers, 3 PTA teachers and 3 ECD teachers.

The school’s infrastructure is fairly good but the school latrines were unsanitary and in very poor condition.

The Intervention

As part of Safaricom Foundation’s strategic direction, and also part of the efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals that aim at ending poverty in the world by 2030, the foundation funded the construction of the latrines at Kshs 998, 565 championed by Safaricom staff Esther Nyoro.

This was a Pamoja Scheme project, a Safaricom initiative that encourages staff members to take active roles in community projects.

The Impact

The 320 pupils and their teachers can now enjoy sanitary facilities and can now concentrate more on quality education and good grades.
