About the project
Mbaani Secondary School located in Yathui Division, Mwala County was established in 1986 and has a population of 320 students. Yathui Division is one of the driest and economically challenged areas of Machakos, and most households struggle to earn a living and pay fees for their children. As such, schools lack the funds to cover the costs for upgrading or expansion of learning facilities, using the income earned from fees to cater for basic needs such as water, food and stationery for students.
The Safaricom Foundation partnered with Mbaani Secondary School to construct a science laboratory to upgrade the teaching of science subjects. Without a lab, science subjects were taught from a purely theoretical perspective, without the complementary practical experiments.
The school now has a modern and fully equipped laboratory that can be used by students, and students who were once apprehensive about further studies in the sciences have more confidence since they have been able to master the practical aspects.
