Expectant women in Faza Island had a major challenge of accessing maternal healthcare as there was no health facility with maternal care services available in the island. The distance between Faza Island and the mainland Lamu was a 3-hour boat ride which exposed expectant mothers and their unborn babies to health risks, on average up to 2 infants died of maternity related causes every month.
Safaricom Foundation constructed a new born unit at Faza Sub-County hospital at a cost of KES 8.4 million.
Maternal health services are closer to the women at Faza. The hospital is accessible to close to 1,000 women in the island. The infant mortality has dropped with improved maternity services.
