About the project

The Challenge

The dispensary’s had an incomplete maternity wing and therefore could not cater well for expectant and new mothers and their infants.

The local population has risen steadily leading to congestion as ante natal and post natal services were sought.

The Intervention

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals, such as reducing the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030, Safaricom Foundation completed the construction of the maternity wing.

Valued at Ksh. 1,087,200, the project involved completing the outstanding works for the new maternity wing such as the internal and external painting of the building, installation of tiles, electrical fittings, plumbing works and the procurement of a water tank and instant water heaters. The foundation also supplied medical equipment such as an ultrasound machine, ultrasound printer and an infant radiant warmer to the dispensary.

The Impact

The newly completed maternity wing and the new medical equipment has  transformed the lives of the expectant and new mothers in Meru, ensuring healthy child births and that the health of the mother and baby is not compromised as they can now easily access quality prenatal and postnatal medical care.
