About the project
Mairungi Primary School has a total of 423 pupils. Unfortunately, this school lacked a library and was dependent on donors for books and newspapers. There were very few books that needed to be shared among the pupils from Class One to Eight. This affected the effort by the school to encourage a reading culture among the students.
The fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) aims to ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy by 2030.
It was for this reason that the Safaricom Foundation invested approximately Kshs 915,000 towards renovation of two classrooms turning them into a library with a capacity of 60 pupils. The foundation also furnished the library and purchased a number of books.
The pupils can now access information in school and will also be able to work on their assignments in school. The new library will encourage a reading culture among the pupils.
