About the project

The Challenge

Mauta Secondary School has a total of 150 students. This school lacks a number of important infrastructure that contribute greatly to improved academic performance such as a library, a safe and reliable source of water and adequate sanitation facilities. The school also had a small computer room with only 10 desktops which were insufficient for the increasing number of students.

The Intervention

The ninth Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) aims to significantly increase access to information and communications technology and strive to provide universal and affordable access to the Internet in least developed countries by 2020.
It was for this reason that the Safaricom Foundation invested Kshs 2.8 million towards construction, furnishing and purchase of 30 more desktop computers. Computer lessons will be mandatory for Form 1 and 2.

The Impact

The new computer laboratory will enable the school to go ahead with its plans to make computer lessons mandatory for Form 1 and 2 students. The new lab will aid the students with computer skills preparing them for their future careers and make them relevant in this technologically advanced era.
