About the project
Biticha Primary School is located in Rigoma, Nyamira County with a student population of over 300 pupils. The school lacked a water management system forcing the students to walk down the river to fetch water for their use at school. The numerous walks to the river greatly interfered with the pupils learning time.
The Safaricom Foundation provided a grant of Ksh. 1.5 million for the establishment of a Catch the Rain Project which is a water management system, a greenhouse and a fish pond so as to enable the school to store enough water for their use and engage in income generating activities.
The project has helped the school to access water for domestic use and for irrigation in the green house where the school has grown tomatoes. The school has also established a fishpond where they reared fingerlings. The project has also aided to reduce the struggle pupils used to go through while fetching water in the river therefore focusing more on their studies.
