About the project

The Challenge

Over 1,000 households were displaced in the four counties by flood. In Tana-River county the heavy rains forced Masinga dam to overflow leaving 400 families homeless. In Lamu County 22 villages in witu and Mpeketoni were submerged by overflowing water from Tana River.

In Baringo the heavy rains had caused displacement of families and loss of life and property leaving over 200 families without shelter and basic household items while in Isiolo 600 households were displaced after Ewaso Nyiro river burst its banks.

Following the displacement of over 1,000 households, there was urgent need to support the affected families with basic items such as mosquito nets, blankets, sleeping mats, face masks and sanitary pads.

The Intervention

Safaricom Foundation partnered with Kenya Red Cross to provide non-food items to the displaced families at a cost of KES 11 million. Part of the items included kitchen sets, soap, facemasks jerricans and sanitary pads.

The Impact

The affected families living conditions have improved with the provisions. They are at low risk of contracting waterborne disease and are also abiding by the Ministry of Health guidelines on COVID-19 on wearing face mask which are re-usable.
