About the project

The Challenge

Dream Children’s Home is an orphanage in Matasia, Ngong, which caters for 52 destitute, orphaned and abandoned children who have been affected by HIV/AIDS.

The Intervention

The Children`s home lacked adequate food and water for 52 children taking shelter there. Eager to help the Home meet its needs in a sustainable manner, the Foundation funded a small scale income-generating project as well as installing a 10,000 litre water tank. In addition to purchasing three dairy cows, dairy meal and constructing a cow shed.

The Impact

The Home has been able to generate an income of KShs 10,500 a month from the sale of the surplus milk and has also developed ingenious ways of increasing its crop of kale and tomatoes, harvesting rain water and using cow dung as manure. The proceeds have not only enabled the orphanage to employ three teachers and two labourers, but, within a year, the Dream Children’s Home has been able to construct a bio gas digester, build two dormitories, two classrooms and to even venture into greenhouse farming.
