About the project
The Kariani Primary School-Special Unit, located in Meru County, is based in the premises of Kariani Primary School, with which it also co-shares facilities. The school with a total population of 44 students (20 of whom are home-based) and two special education teachers and one support staff have one special unit classroom and one vocational classroom, funded by the Government and other organizations.
However, the school lacks a perimeter fence to keep intruders out and students inside. This is harmful to the students because they were straying to the road and eventually to the Kariani Shopping Center exposing them to the dangers of road accidents. The lack of a fence also exposed the children who strayed to a neighboring private forest to sexual abusers. The straying children, due to the absence of a fence also led to increased stigmatization of students.
Safaricom Foundation donated Ksh. 796,000 to build a perimeter fence that is 125 x 122 m, a mixture of masonry wall and a chain link fence, around the compound with concrete poles.
The newly constructed perimeter fence around the school will keep children in and intruders out, protecting them from external dangers such as social stigmatization, sexual abusers and road accidents.
