About the project

The Challenge

In Baringo County, the maternity mortality was 375 deaths of women for every 100,000 who give birth. This was compared to the national figure of 362 deaths of women per 100,000. The infant mortality rate was 31 infant deaths per 1,000 born compared to the national figure of 22 infant deaths per 1,000 born.

The maternal High Dependency Unit (HDU) could only accommodate 8 women, hindering access to many women. The Newborn Unit (NBU) was not equipped to cater to infants who developed health complications after birth.

The Intervention

Safaricom Foundation constructed a maternal High Dependency Unit and Newborn Unit at a cost of KES 11 million.

The Impact

The expanded maternal HDU has been expanded to a bed capacity of 36 thus enabling many women to access the facility and the equipped NBU is providing services to infants with health complications.
