About the project
Asilong Primary School was started in 1997 by the African Inland Church (AIC) with the intention of improving the literacy levels in Kacheliba Location. Periodic droughts during the formation years coupled with poor learning facilities led to a sharp decline in the number of pupils from the majorly nomadic community leading to eventual closure in 2002.
The School’s infrastructure was made of temporary mud-walled structures and Safaricom Foundation pledged to construct a dormitory for the boys after assessing the dire need for the facility in the school.? The dormitory will enhance the educational experience for Pokot boys who usually out of school due to drought and the pastoralist way of life. Safaricom Foundation also purchased beds and mattresses for the dormitory.
Today there is better learning environment thanks to Safaricom Foundation in partnership with Constituency Development Fund. At Asilong Primary School the boys can enjoy spacious accommodation within the school compound which will boost their learning. Besides when their pastoralist families move, they stay in school and can now compete for opportunities on an equal footing as the rest.
