About the project

The Challenge

A Rocha Kenya, a Christian conservation and development organisation based in Watamu, initiated and manages The Arabuko-Sokoke Schools and Eco-tourism Scheme ASSETS. ASSETS uses funds generated from eco-tourism to help local disadvantaged children attend secondary school, to raise awareness among their families of the importance of protecting the natural environment and to work with them to take up the use of appropriate native technologies and income generating activities.

The Intervention

A Rocha Kenya was awarded a grant by the Safaricom Foundation, to implement the project, Connecting Communities and the Environment through Education

The Impact

The project has been highly welcomed by the community and recent research indicates an improvement perception towards conservation of the forest and creek.
