World of Difference 2 – Ready for the Challenge

The Hallmark of a Life-Changing Experience

On 3rd December 2010, The Safaricom Foundation picked the winning teams and individuals to participate in the second phase of the World of Difference (WOD 2) programme. The second phase of the programme has expanded compared to the first year which had only three teams taking part. WOD 2 has four teams each comprised of four members and three individual participants.

The four groups consist of Safaricom staff from Nairobi and the individual participants are staff from regional offices outside Nairobi. Plans are underway to add to a fifth team from the media who will also be the official media partner for WOD2.

WOD offers a unique opportunity for Safaricom staff and other invited participants to take part in a life-changing experience and to strengthen our partnerships with our project partners and subsequently with the local communities served by our partners. The placements will begin in January 2011and run for 12-months with the exception of the individual participants who will only serve for a 3-month duration.

Passion and Commitment

This second phase of WOD offers individuals who are passionate and committed to working with local organizations the platform to volunteer their time and expertise to serve in community programmes of their choice. It will be a life-time opportunity to contribute their knowledge, skills and expertise in the implementation of the organizations' projects. Aside from getting a unique capacity building and exposure opportunity, the volunteers will have a chance  to learn from these organizations and better understand the challenges facing them in carrying out their mandates.

Winners Picked on Merit

The selection was done on a competitive basis. Teams comprising four people from a multi-disciplinary background (or individuals from regional offices) were required to submit a proposal based on their project of choice, outlining how they will work together on the year-long project (or 3 months in the case of individuals). The successful teams and individuals would then have the opportunity to work for their project of choice.

The Goals of WOD 2

WOD is designed to enhance staff engagement and involvement so as to realize the Corporate Responsibility of the Foundation through:

  • Promoting community work and volunteerism amongst the staff of Safaricom and the invited participants
  • Enhancing staff's knowledge and skills in community-based service through firsthand experience
  • Helping partner organizations implement life-changing programmes

How the Winners Were Picked

The winning proposal and the winning teams/individuals were developed by the team of staff and project partner who best:

  • Detailed the scope of the 12-month challenge (or 3 months for individuals)
  • Identified the skills that the team/individual would bring
  • Identified the areas where the team/individual would apply their skills
  • Identified the expected results for the project, the community and the team/individual
