Ngare Ndare Forest Trust

Introduction

Ngare Ndare Forest Trust (NNFT) works in areas of forest conservation and community development/empowerment. The trust is located in two areas traversing two districts namely Meru Central and Laikipia. The forest is very important to all the livelihoods of the adjacent communities which include Subuiga, Kisima, Mbugu, Ethi and Ngare Ndare. The forest serves as their only reliable source of forest products such as dry season grazing, water, firewood, herbs, wild honey and building materials.

The Ngare Ndare Forest Working Committee was formed by key stakeholders in 1987 to help improve conservation and management of this important forest. These stakeholders are drawn from the five communities adjacent to the neighbouring large scale farms (Kisima, Lewa, Borana and Nothern Frontier Ventures) the Forest department, KWS and the Provincial Administration. The working committee was to later become the Ngare Ndare Forest Trust (NNFT) as we know it today.
