Jamaa Mission Hospital
Introduction
Jamaa Mission Hospital started operating as a nursing home in 1971. It is a project owned by Sisters of Our Lady of Charity. The sisters are assisted by 6 trustees to oversee the running of all their projects under the Edelvale Trust. The hospital offers medical services to the local community either as outpatients/casualty or inpatients. In addition to this, it also offers diagnostic services to patients and other hospitals in the neighbourhood through provision of efficient X-ray radiography and ultrasound as well as specimen testing in the laboratory. A well stocked pharmacy ensures drugs are available to all who need them. A well equipped operating theatre ensures that those patients who require emergency and elective surgeries are also taken care of. Ambulance services are also offered and a well equipped kitchen ensures hot meals are provided to patients and staff. These services are available round the clock or on a 24-hour basis.
The hospital is run by a team of competent managers comprising the Hospital Administrator, Doctor in charge of clinical services, Office Manager, Human Resource Manager and a Finance Manager. Jamaa Mission Hospital was upgraded to a Hospital status in 2006. The hospital is a member of the Private Hospitals Association of Kenya and currently employs 140 staff. Currently it is an 85-bed capacity facility, with functional departments operating on a 24-hour basis.
Key Initiative:
Fistula Project
In 2004, Jamaa Mission Hospital, received support to launch a programme to perform fistula repairs on women with obstetric fistula and to train health care providers in pre- and post-operative care and rehabilitation. The main support came from a German foundation (The Johanniter Unfall-Hilfe E.V.), Verona Fathers as well as Pat Ryan and Family. In 2007 the Safaricom Foundation came on board as a donor to the initiative. The support from the foundation has enabled the programme to carry out both operations and rehabilitation. So far, over 1870 operations have been carried out successfully.
